Teeth whitening is a popular dental procedure for those looking for a whiter and brighter smile. Teeth whitening helps improve the overall appearance and boost self-confidence. The effects of teeth whitening are not everlasting. The length of time you can expect teeth whitening to last depends on the type of whitening product used and how the procedure is maintained. At-home care after teeth whitening procedure plays a critical role in the maintenance of whiter teeth.

The teeth whitening process temporarily makes the teeth more sensitive and susceptible to stains. Stain causing foods and drinks mentioned below should be avoided for at least two days after the procedure.

Certain Beverages

Beverages that contain dyes and tannins should be avoided after teeth whitening.  This includes beverages such as:

Dark teas
Red wine
Dark soda
Colored sports drinks
Tomato juice

If you feel yourself needing your caffeine fix or needing a glass of wine to relax, try using a straw to drink your beverage so it can bypass your teeth and avoid discoloration.

Foods That Stain

Foods that contain food coloring, dyes, or ingredients known to stain should be avoided after a teeth whitening procedure. These foods include:

Red pasta sauce
Soy sauce
Foods containing turmeric or paprika
Naturally and artificially colored candy

Acidic Foods

Consuming acidic food has the potential to further harm the enamel which has been previously weakened by the teeth whitening process. Acidic foods to void include:

Lemons & Limes

Tobacco Products

In addition to being harmful to your oral health, tobacco products play a major role in staining or re-staining your teeth after teeth whitening. It’s recommended to avoid smoking and/or chewing tobacco products, to keep your teeth a pearly white color.
